We had our big Easter kick-off this past Saturday. Everything went well and according to plan. We had a good turn-out and everything went smoothly. It's sometimes hard to tell from my vantage point as the pastor, but I'd also venture to say that it was a worshipful experience for those involved.
We didn't have as large a response to our postcard mailing as we would have liked, but we still had around 40 people altogether including LifeSpring people, Core Team and Wheaton friends. The room felt full anyway and the people that did come said they liked it and might be back, so that's encouraging.
The facility wasn't the greatest. We're renting the Karate practice room at the local YMCA. However, to get to it you have to go through some locked doors, up a stairwell, and down a narrow, winding hallway to a room with no windows to get to it. Plus the nursery is on the complete opposite end of the building. Of course, we can't stay there past the end of May anyway 'cuz they're changing their weekend hours on us, which is just as well. It'll force us to find a better facility.
But our Vision Team was fantastic! Everyone pitched in and got the set-up done in no time. And the room actually looked halfway decent (for a Karate practice room).
I opened the night with an introduction about the kind of church we want to be, and then we moved into telling the Crucifixion story from scripture. Then my friend Matt and his friend Steve helped lead us in a few worship songs. We took communion and then a break and then came back together for a sermon/discussion in clusters. After that we wrapped up by reading the Resurrection story, singing few more songs, and closing in prayer.
We're happy with how things turned out. Now it will be interesting to see how it goes next week when fewer LifeSpring friends come out. Hopefully we might get some delayed response yet from our postcards.
Thanks to everyone who was praying for our kick-off. It really helped. Keep praying for us!
